Cheese Tea: Should You Try The New Trend?

You might have heard of bubble milk tea, but have you heard about the cheese tea trend? This new phenomenon is now growing in the U.S. as well.

While the combination of tea and cheese doesn't sound too appetizing. The cheese tea actually tastes better than it sounds. If you love bubble milk tea, the cheese tea isn’t that different in taste.

The cheese foam on top of the drink is usually made of cream cheese, whipping cream, milk, salt, and sugar. But, like with any recipe, there are some other variations. For example, some will use evaporated/frothed milk or condensed milk. You could also use powdered cheese or even a sour cream!

The Origins of Cheese Tea

Where did cheese tea come from?

Cheese tea was originated in Taiwan sometime during 2010, although similar milky teas could be found in Asian countries beforehand. The original Taiwanese version of cheese tea was made with powdered cheese mixed with whipping cream and milk. Then, the froth layer was placed on green or black tea with a dash of salt.

A few years later, cheese tea made its way to China and was evolved into another version, which included cream cheese instead of the powdered cheese. The cream cheese makes the top layer thicker yet still drinkable similarly to the foam on a latte or cappuccino. In this case, however, the drink is consumed cold.

Cheese Tea Today

Cheese tea is very popular in Asian countries including Malaysia, Singapore Taiwan, and China. It has been available for several years in local coffee shops all over Asia, although it's only recently become an international sensation. According to Eater, the drink already started to gain popularity in several bobba shops across the U.S. as well.
