Add Water, Give Water
aka Coffee is not only about selling coffee. While researching the coffee industry, we learned about the large amount of water waste produced by coffee processing.
Coffee beans are actually seed of a cherry-like fruit that turn bright red when they are ripe and ready to pick. After they are picked, the coffee cherries are washed to remove their sticky flesh. The cherries are then placed in flotation tanks full of water to distinguish between the ripe and unripe berries as the lighter ripe beans float to the top, and the unripe beans sink. Finally, after the separation, the ripe beans are placed in clean water to induce the naturally caused fermentation for about 12 hours. In this natural fermentation phase, the enzymes will help removing the fruit’s remainder flesh that is still attached.
As an emerging player in the coffee industry, we recognize the gap where in some places water is used for manufacturing, while in other places there is not even water for drinking. Waka Coffee wants to expand access to clean water in developing countries. We encourage our suppliers to save water, and we always donate 4% of our proceeds to clean and safe drinking water initiatives.
Access to clean drinking water affects every aspect of life, such as health, wealth, education, equality, and much more. Currently, about 633 million people in the world live without clean water. For reference, that’s twice the population of the United States! This is why we created our “Add Water, Give Water” program.
Through our program, we donate 4% of our proceeds to charity: water to support incredible projects that bring clean drinking water to 26 countries around the world - in Africa, Asia, Central and South America. charity: water is passionate about solving the water crisis in our lifetime, using 100% of all public donations to fund water projects, and proving where every dollar goes with photos and GPS coordinates. Their local partners coordinate sanitation and hygiene training, and establish a local Water Committee to help keep water flowing for years to come in each funded water point.
