Unsweetened Flavored Instant Tea Powder: How to Tell Real Tea From a Drink Mix

An unsweetened flavored instant tea powder is one where the flavor comes from natural flavors added to the tea itself, with no sugar, no sweetener and no bulking agents. Most flavored instant tea powders on the shelf are not this. They are drink mixes in which sugar or a sweetener is the first ingredient by weight and the tea is a minor component. Reading the ingredient panel is the only reliable way to tell them apart.

The three things sold as flavored instant tea

Type First ingredient What you taste
Sweetened drink mix Sugar or dextrose Mostly sweetener, faint tea
Sugar-free drink mix Maltodextrin or a bulking agent, plus a high-intensity sweetener Sweet, often with an aftertaste
Unsweetened flavored tea powder Tea Tea, with the named flavor

The tell is volume. A sweetened mix asks for a heaped tablespoon or a whole sachet per glass, because most of that volume is sugar. An unsweetened tea powder asks for about 1/4 teaspoon per 8–10 fl oz, because it is concentrated tea.

What is in Waka's flavored instant teas

None of our instant coffees or instant teas include added sugars or sweeteners — the flavored ones included. Unflavored teas are 100% tea with no additives or aromatizing matter. Flavored teas are the same tea with natural flavors added, produced without carriers, fillers, colors or preservatives.

Available flavors: green tea in lemon, mango, peach, pineapple and blueberry; black tea in Earl Grey, peach and blueberry.

Caffeine is approximately 35 mg per 1/4 tsp (about 0.63 grams) for both black and green instant tea, flavored or not.

What "natural flavors" means here

Natural flavors means the tea includes the actual named flavor where possible — peach, blueberry — supported by flavors derived from other natural sources to strengthen it. All of our natural flavors contain no preservatives and are made from vegan, gluten free ingredients. Per FDA regulations, and to protect our recipes, we do not publish the exact composition of the natural flavors themselves.

How to sweeten it yourself, if you want to

Starting unsweetened means you set the level. Add sweetener while the powder is dissolving in warm water so it does not settle, or see our guide to sweetening iced tea without sugar. For batches, our guide to making a pitcher of iced tea has the scaling chart.

Frequently asked questions

Is unsweetened the same as sugar free?

Not necessarily. A product can be labeled sugar free and still contain a high-intensity sweetener plus a bulking agent. Unsweetened, in the sense used here, means nothing was added to make it sweet at all. Check the ingredient list rather than the front of the pack.

Why is there white powder mixed into my flavored tea?

Those are natural flavor particles mixed in with the tea. They are safe to consume and dissolve when mixed with water. Brands that add artificial ingredients get a uniform color; because we do not, some separation between the flavor powder and the tea powder is normal and varies by flavor.

Are the flavored teas vegan and gluten free?

To the best of our knowledge, all the teas and flavors used in our products do not include gluten and are vegan-friendly. We cannot guarantee they have not come into contact with gluten somewhere in the supply chain, so consult your doctor if you have health concerns.

Do flavored teas have more caffeine than unflavored?

No. Flavored and unflavored green and black instant teas both contain approximately 35 mg per 1/4 tsp.

Where can I buy unsweetened flavored instant tea?

Directly from us, and also on Amazon, eBay, Walmart, iHerb and Coupang. Please buy only from our official accounts. Select retail locations are listed on our store locator.
