What is Instant Coffee?

You may be wondering, what is instant coffee and how does it stack up compared to ground coffee?

Instant is a type of coffee that can be dissolved in hot or cold water. It is made by dehydrating brewed coffee and results in coffee crystals or a powdered form.

How to Make Instant Coffee?

Using instant coffee is the simplest way to make yourself a cup of coffee. It’s a no fuss and no mess method! All you need to do is pour your quality instant coffee in a cup, add water and stir until all the crystals are dissolved. Then, you are ready to enjoy it without any clean up needed.

Instant Coffee History

So, where did instant coffee come from and how long have we been enjoying this form of coffee?

The first version of something that was similar to instant coffee was created in 1771 in Britain and was called a “coffee compound.” Another version appeared in America in 1851 during the Civil War in 1851 under the name "Essence of Coffee." Unfortunately, these versions' drink consistency was so thick that it was unpopular and eventually discontinued.

It wasn’t until 1890 where a soluble instant coffee was invented by David Strand in New Zealand. He utilized what was called a “dry hot-air” process. However, in 1901, a more stable type of soluble coffee powder was created by the Japanese scientist, Satori Kato. The coffee crystals, contrary to the powdery consistency available beforehand, were invented in 1910 by the American chemist George Constant Louis Washington.

The type of instant coffee we see today was created during World War II. This is when a large coffee company created their own soluble instant coffee to solve the issue of spoiling coffee and ease of use for the soldiers fighting abroad. When they refined their processes and upgraded their original product after the war, it became a better tasting instant coffee and looks like the type of instant coffee we have on the market today.
