This milk tea is traditionally served hot and sweet, but of course, there is room for personal adjustments with evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The evaporated milk gives the tea some color while the sweetened condensed milk creates a smooth and rich mouthfeel. You have the control to adjust your level of sweetness by adding more or less condensed milk.
Hong Kong Milk Tea is similar to Vietnamese coffee — both highly caffeinated and offering a pleasant buzz. It is often drunk in the morning to start a day off with a sweet kick. It’s paired with a sweet pineapple bun or savory congee (a type of rice porridge, shown in the photo above). Every restaurant and cafe has their own way of serving it, but we found our perfect way of preparing it with Waka Coffee’s Instant Black Tea!
Hong Kong Style Milk Tea Recipe
Makes for one serving
- 2 servings of Waka Coffee black tea powder (the tea should be very dark and concentrated, while the milk will offset the strong flavor)
- 4-6 fl oz of cold water
- ⅓ cup evaporated milk
- 1 teaspoon sweetened condensed milk (add more if you like it sweeter)
