What is Amaretto?

mix alcohol and instant coffee recipe

An Amaretto is an Italian liqueur that means “a little bitter”. It has a slightly bitter, but sweet taste that can be enjoyed alone or mixed. It was originally made and flavored with bitter almonds, but now depending on the brand, can be flavored with apricot pits, peach pits, vanilla, or almonds, along with other spices and flavorings.

The Amaretto is good alone over ice or can be mixed in with another drink to make an alcoholic cocktail. It is also used in cooking and baking since it can enhance the chocolate flavors in desserts and elevate flavors in a dish. One unique way of using Amaretto instead of a cocktail is adding it to iced or hot coffee.

Origin

The Amaretto originated in Saronno, Italy during the 14th century. Its origin is based on a story and believed to be first made by a widower. The widower made it for a painter she modeled for and eventually fell in love with.

How is Amaretto Made?

Amaretto can be bought in store, or even made from scratch right at home! A simple homemade Amaretto liqueur recipe can be made with dried apricots, dried apricot kernels, chopped almonds, water, vodka, brandy, dried cherries, almond extract, vanilla extract, and sugar. Although the ingredients are simple, it takes a few weeks for all the ingredient to infuse together to create the flavors of Amaretto. Also, if you make it at home, the ingredients are easily customizable to your own taste preferences! For instance, you can use dried peaches instead of cherries if you like that flavor better.

Why Amaretto is Paired With Coffee

Adding alcohol or liquor to coffee is a popular practice with many different recipes and combinations. However, one alcohol that goes especially well with coffee’s taste is the Amaretto. This is because its sweetness and nutty flavor compliments the coffee. It also doesn’t add too much heat, but just enough to keep the body warm during the colder months. It can also be drunk as a cold drink and topped with whipped cream to turn it into a post-dinner dessert beverage. To fully enjoy the complimentary flavors together, one tip is to not make your coffee as strong as the flavor can overpower the taste of the Amaretto.

Why Would Amaretto Be Perfect With Instant Coffee?

Pairing Amaretto with instant coffee would be perfect because you can quickly whip up a delicious alcoholic coffee drink while skipping the brewing time. With instant coffee, you can also easily make an iced Amaretto coffee drink topped with whipped cream without having to worry about cooling the coffee beforehand. Instant coffee with Amaretto is a simple way to elevate your evening or late night coffee to relax at the end of a long day. Minus washing your coffeemaker after that.
