With the growing popularity of the Keto diet, it’s a relief coffee is one drink that can stay in your daily diet.
How do you prepare your coffee to make sure it is low-carb and Keto friendly? After the success of our previous post "Keto Diet and Instant Coffee" we decided to give you a few more tips on how to prepare your coffee or instant coffee for your Keto daily intake.
Recap: What is Keto Diet?
A Keto diet, short for Ketogenic, is a type of low-carb and high fat diet. With this diet, certain foods need to either be limited or cut out completely. Foods like grains or rice, candy, and sugary drinks should be eliminated while foods like potatoes and fruit should be cut down on. The Keto diet could be good for losing weight and cutting down fat from the body. This is because the low carb and high fat diet puts your body into ketosis.
Ketosis is a metabolic state where your body and body cells switch from using sugar or glucose as fuel to fat and fatty acids as an energy source. This way, you train your body into helping break down fats; however, Ketosis can only be maintained if you strictly keep yourself on the Keto diet routine throughout the day, including during your breakfast.
Importance of Coffee for a Keto Diet
Luckily for everyone, although the keto diet may seem strict, there is no need to give up coffee on your daily dose of caffeine. There are many benefits to coffee while working out or on a diet, as mentioned in our previous blog. The caffeine in coffee not only contains antioxidants and nutrients, but also gives you increased energy to go about your day. Coffee and caffeine can aid the breakdown of body fats as shown in this research, which help your body while on the Keto diet.
6 Ways to Make Your Coffee Low Carb & Keto Friendly
Drink black coffee
Black or plain coffee is great for those on the Keto diet. This is because you get all the benefits of coffee, as described above, without any added sugar or cream. It is the healthiest way to drink coffee because it contains the least amount of calories and won’t boost your blood sugar level. To elevate your black coffee, try quality instant coffee made with 100% single-origin Arabica beans for an easy, but delicious caffeine fix.
Use Keto creamer
To keep up with the Keto diet, it is important to give up milk because it contains lactose, which is a sugar. Instead, there are plenty of cream or milk options for your coffee if you don’t like drinking it plain! You can use heavy cream, almond milk, or Keto friendly creamers that are almond milk or coconut milk based.
Include MCT oil
MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides and can boost the health benefits of coffee. This is because once the body absorbs it, it can be used for energy. It also boosts metabolism, which can aid in weight loss.
Use grass-fed butter
This type of butter is made from healthier cows that graze primarily on grass, which creates a higher quality butter. Although butter in coffee may seem weird, its health benefits may be worth trying it in your instant coffee! It contains five times more omega-6 fatty acid than regular butter, which encourages the break down of fat.
Make your own coffee
One of the best ways to keep up the Keto diet and make sure your coffee is low-carb is to make your own coffee. This is to ensure you know exactly what is going into your cup, and it effectively avoids all the extra additives that can come with your coffee when buying from a cafe or coffee chain. One of the easiest ways to make your coffee on-the-go is with instant coffee! Not only does it contain all the benefits of brewed coffee, but it prevents you from having to rely on buying coffee from shops when you’re in a rush. Take hot water with you in a coffee tumbler and a packet of instant coffee. Mix it when you need your caffeine fix.
Use sugar-free syrups/non-sugar sweeteners
If you’re having trouble cutting out all sugar from your diet, there are sugar alternatives for those who need their coffee sweet. There are sugar-free syrups and non-sugar sweeteners available for those who need to feed their sweet tooth but without the actual sugar. However, it is important to read labels and ingredients because certain popular sugar substitutes can still raise blood sugar levels like regular sugar.
